The Scoop: junior Willie Thomas
Cairo High School recently chose 11th-grader Willie Thomas as its Student of the Week. Here’s a little more information about Willie and his involvement at C.H.S.
Thomas, the son of Willie Thomas Sr. and Alicia Gurley Byrden, lives in Cairo. The 17-year-old was nominated for Cairo High’s Student of the Week award by Mrs. Tonnie Gainous, a secretary at C.H.S., for being responsible and honest in turning in another student’s lost item to the front office.
The junior shares that his favorite subject is mathematics, and his favorite teacher at C.H.S is construction instructor Mr. Yancy Burkes. Outside of his courses, Willie is a member of the school’s Helping Hands Club, which supports Cairo High School special education students, as well as the school's eSports team.
A chorus participant throughout middle school and high school, Thomas also sings bass in the C.H.S. chorus, which is directed by Ms. Erikka Edwards. After school, Willie says he works in his father’s barber shop and relaxes by writing music, making beats, and rapping. After graduating from Cairo High, Willie plans to attend the University of Connecticut and learn more about the world around him.
