The Scoop: freshman Gabe Childs & junior Sierra Nix

Gabe (left) and Sierra (right) were recently named C.H.S. Students of the Week.

Cairo High School restarted its PBIS Student of the Week program with the school year this fall, and one feature of this column will be sharing the good decisions and accomplishments of these outstanding teens at our school. Two students have already been honored at CHS, so here’s the scoop on Gabe Childs and Sierra Nix.

Gabe Childs, 15, is the 9th grade son of Becky and Chris Reddick. Mathematics teacher Mrs. Paige Banks nominated Childs, a Whigham resident, as Student of the Week for being exceptionally responsible.

“I had several students who were absent on a test day, and [Gabe] is one of the only few who has actually made that test up,” Mrs. Banks explained. “He came in within the next day and took the [missed] test, and I wanted to make sure he was rewarded for that.”

Childs shares that math is, and has always been, his favorite subject, and that Mrs. Banks is his favorite educator at the high school.

When he has free time, Gabe says he enjoys working on his truck with his dad during the week and hanging out with friends on the weekend. After graduating from high school, Gabe says he want to attend a technical school to become a diesel mechanic.

Next up is Sierra Nix, a junior at Cairo High. Sierra lives in Cairo with her parents, daughter Audrey and Johnny Nix. The 17-year-old was nominated by Mr. Alex Papanicolopoulos, a CHS English instructor better known as Mr. “P,” because she shows respect towards her peers, specifically for changing seats when she was feeling chilly rather than affecting the entire class by turning off Mr. P’s classroom A/C .

Nix says her favorite educator is science teacher Mr. Thomas Shamayla, with chemistry being her favorite class.

At school, Sierra is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, National Honor Society, and Baseball Belles, a group that assists the Syrupmaker baseball team. The 11th-grader was also recently elected as a Student Council representative for the junior class.

Nix works at Mr. Chick after school, and enjoys hanging out with friends and watching college football in her free time.

After graduating, Sierra plans to attend college, preferably UGA, and enter the field of sports management, law, business, or marine biology.
