The grass playing surface of West Thomas Stadium's football field is currently being replaced with new artificial AstroTurf by the Sports Turf Company. The goal is for the field to be completed by graduation in May, but if it is completed more quickly, there is also the potential that Cairo High may host a state playoff soccer game in late April, according to Athletic Director Mr. Tom Fallaw.
After lots of rainy weather, progress was made last month removing the grass and smoothing the dirt surface. Sand was then spread over the dirt surface, followed by a layer of gravel that began to be applied in late March.
Currently, as of March 31, workers appear to be adding and smoothing additional layers of sand and gravel.
Earlier this winter, the Grady County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the just-over $1 million budget for the turf to be installed at CHS, according to the Cairo Messenger.
Members of the varsity football team recently told the Red & Black that they look forward to getting to work on the new field.
Below is a slideshow of construction currently underway. Check back with the Red & Black for future updates.
