Sign up now for October OneBlood Drive
On Thursday, October 8, from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Cairo High School will be having a blood drive sponsored by OneBlood. Students and teachers ages 16 and up are welcomed to sign up with Mrs. Shakedia Williams at the College and Career Building (Room 302). Those who are planning on donating can also sign up online by visiting the OneBlood website and using sponsor code #17601.
Anyone who has any symptoms of COVID-19, who has tested positive, or has been exposed must wait 14 days before donating; those waiting for COVID-19 results are also ineligible to donate.
Students who are 18 years old can participate in the blood drive without parent consent. All other students must bring a parent consent form with them when they are donating blood. Everyone must bring a photo ID with them and be sure to eat a full meal on that day before giving blood.
Those who donate blood will also receive a wellness check, including blood pressure, temperature, iron count, pulse, and cholesterol screening and a Halloween T-shirt.
This time around, the wellness check will also include a COVID-19 antibody test. "Having antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 may provide protection from getting infected with the virus again," according to the Centers for Disease Control. However, "how much protection the antibodies may provide or how long this protection may last" is uncertain.
There are also potential health benefits to donating regularly, such as helping your blood flow and fewer arterial blockages, according to OneBlood.
If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to Mrs. Williams in the College and Career Building.
