Preview: Syrupmaids enter the Final Four vs Troup Co

The girl's basketball team has been on fire this season, with 17 wins and only one loss. The ladies have even made it to the Final Four of the state playoffs for Class AAAA for the first time in 38 years.

When asked how she felt about leading her girls to such an accomplishment, Head Coach Daphne McClendon told the Red & Black,

"We are not satisfied. We are in the final four because of who we are when we work together."

In the semi-final round of the playoffs, the girls will play the Troup Tigers of LaGrange tonight, Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. The Tigers currently have a record of 15-5 and are coming off an Elite Eight 49-42 victory over the Flowery Branch Falcons.

According to Max Preps, the Tigers are led by junior forward Aniya Palmer, who wears number jersey #1 and is averaging 13 points per game this season, along with nine rebounds and three assists. Her season highlight was a 26-point scoring performance in a 82-43 blowout of Kendrick on January 26. Another player to be on the lookout for is #21, sophomore forward Alexcia Murphy, who leads her team in rebounds per game (11) and is just behind Aniya in scoring at 11 points per game.

If the ladies continue this fiery trail, they will enter the finale against whoever wins between the Cedar Shoals Jaguars of Athens and the Carver Tigers of Columbus. The AAAA region championship will be held next Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Macon.
