Grady County Voices 2020 Writing Competition
It is that time of the year once again for students in the Grady County School System to enter into the annual Voices writing and art competition. This marks the 12th year of the competition here in the county.
The Voices book is mostly comprised of writing of all students' work from grades K-12. Each school will submit 20 writing entries, all finalized by how each school decides to select them. All selections should vary from writers of all ages and grades. There is no specific topic that needs to be addressed, so creativity is welcomed in whatever students decide to write about. The entries can include personal narratives, reports, short stories, poetry, essays, journals, or any original student writing.
Writing entries for students in grades 3-12 must be typed in Times New Romans font and may not be longer than 700 words. Students in grade K-2 may be in its original form and include the original pictures drawn by the students, which are mostly done by those in kindergarten.
Along with writing entries, there is also a drawing portion that young artists can participate in. Each school will submit one piece of art to be considered for the cover page of the Voices book, again through the schools' own selection processes.
This year’s artwork should be in response to the theme of "FIND YOUR JOY IN WRITING.”
Only one piece of artwork will be selected to be on the front cover page of the Voices book; however, all other work entries will also be included in the book.
Before entering a student’s writing or artwork, the student must return a permission form signed by a parent or guardian. All students must turn in their artwork or writing beforehand to their teachers by Feb. 28, 2020.
If your child’s writing or artwork is selected, her or she will be invited to attend the Voices ceremony. If your child is selected, make sure to attend the ceremony that will take place on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the Cairo High School Auditorium. That night, students will receive a free copy of the book, and any additional books will be sold for $10.00 after the ceremony.
