Five CHS students to perform in GMEA District Honor Band
According to Mr. John Scanling, CHS Band Director, five Cairo High students, who were selected through an audition process earlier this winter, will be participating in the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) District Honor Band in Tifton, Ga., this weekend. These students are sophomores Georgia Barham-Taylor and Kyle Boyett; junior Trinity Crego; and seniors Kendall Boyd and Truett Hendrix.
Truett told the Red & Black, "Tomorrow we will perform in bands according to our grade level in the spot we made it in from our tryouts.
This is what the hours of practice going into this weekend will amount to and we are so excited to have this opportunity. It is a great chance to show our love for music and passion for the event."
In regards to whether the performance would be judged or whether it was to simply showcase their skills, he said, "It will showcase the skills of these talented players as a whole, no judgement or competition! Simply the enjoyment of playing!"
Georgia explained the process of the auditions, which were held on December 14, 2019. "We practice for a while until auditions at the selected school, then we play our scales and selected etude for a judge. Then we get results and then later [are] told if we made Honor Band."
She described the process as "nerve-racking" but said that the "payoff was well worth it."
