EOC testing begins next Monday
Cairo High School's End-of-Course (EOC) testing for American Literature, US History, Biology, and Algebra I will occur next Monday, January 11 through Thursday, January 14, 2021. The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) requires all high schoolers to take these four Milestone exams to test how well they have learned, "state-adopted content standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies," according to the GaDOE website.
Virtual school students enrolled in EOC classes must come to campus to take the EOCs next week, according to Mrs. Tammy Donalson, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Instruction. The following testing schedule applies to virtual students as well, except that their exams will begin "promptly" at 3 p.m. each afternoon. These students are to be in Cairo High School's lobby no later than 2:50 p.m. to be assigned to a computer lab.
Monday: American Literature, Part I
Classes testing: Mrs. Shirley Brown's 1st and 2nd blocks; Mr. Papanicolopolous' 1st, 2nd, and 3rd blocks; all virtual students taking American Literature.
Bell Schedule: To accommodate the concentration of those testing, all students will remain in 1st block until testing is complete, which is expected to be around 9:45 a.m.
Tuesday: American Literature, Parts II and III
Classes testing: Same as Monday.
Bell Schedule: Students that are not testing will change from 1st to 2nd block as normal at 9:23 a.m. and will stay in their 2nd block class until testing is complete. This bell schedule will also be used on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thursday: Algebra I
Classes testing: Mrs. Banks' 1st, 3rd, and 4th blocks; Mrs. Barrett's 1st and 2nd blocks; Mr. Dudely's 2nd block; Mrs. Reynolds' 4th block; and all virtual students enrolled in a 1st semester Algebra I class.
For those who are absent on the day of their EOC, makeup exams will be administered on Tuesday and Thursday, January 12 and January 14, in the data room on Fourth Wing.
When speaking with the R&B, Mrs. Donalson reminded students that these state-required tests are mandatory, and she emphasized the importance of all virtual and in-person students enrolled in classes with an EOC coming to campus to take those exams next week.
Cairo High School students typically take these tests for first semester classes in the final weeks before Christmas Break. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced Grady County Schools to begin the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year in January, the high school also postponed EOCs to give students who test a full semester of study.
In July 2020, Governor Brian Kemp approved a law that halved the number of required EOCs for Georgia high schoolers from eight tests to four. This eliminated the standardized exams for 9th grade English, Economics, Physical Science, and Geometry, according to The Daily Tribune of Cartersville, Ga.
