'Cruella' coming in May
In recent years, Disney has been known for creating live-action films from their iconic Disney Original vault. It's no different with Cruella de Vil from "101 Dalmatians." Cruella is getting her own movie, but instead of focusing on the Dalmatians, it will focus on her origin story and how she became the wicked villain we know her as today. The movie is planed to be released on May 28, 2021, but it is still being decided by Disney whether the movie will be available on Disney+.
This prequel for "101 Dalmatians" is set in 1970s London and follows Estella (played by Academy Award winner for "La La Land," Emma Stone) as she tries to make a name for herself with her fashion designs. With Estella's taste for fashion, she catches the eye of a fashion legend, Baroness von Hellman (played by two-time Academy Award winner, Emma Thompson) and their relationship causes a domino effect that eventually leads to Estella becoming the fashionable, vengeful, and wicked Cruella.
The official trailer for the movie was released February 17, and it caught the eyes of a lot of people. After seeing the trailer, many compared the movie to "Maleficent," since both are from the villain's perspective; it also looks like they are redeeming Cruella in this movie, as well.
Some also compared it to the 2019 "Joker," starring Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix and the 2020 "Harley Quin: Birds of Prey"-starring Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie. In reference to the Joker's famous line, one commenter on YouTube said,
"I used to think that my life was a tragedy. But now I realize, it’s a fashion show."
