CHS teachers to nominate rising seniors for Washington Youth Tour
Updated: Deadline for applications now March 3
Now is the time for Cairo High School teachers to nominate rising seniors for the yearly Washington Youth Tour sponsored by Grady EMC, according to Cairo High Work-Based Learning Coordinator and Career Counselor Mrs. Michelle Ausley.
The deadline for nominations will be at noon on Tuesday, March 3, and on Thursday, March 5, Mr. Adam Starr, Grady EMC Manager of Member Services, will be here to serve the candidates lunch and interview them in a casual setting.
Formally known as The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, this program held during the summer "has brought high school students to Washington, D.C. every June since the late 1950s, according to Grady EMC. "Students apply and are selected for this program by their local electric cooperative. We believe that students should see their nation’s capital up close, learn about the political process, and interact with their elected officials," the website states.
During Youth Day, there will be featured speakers to "provide insight to the important roles electric cooperatives play in their community. Students gain a personal understanding of American history and their role as a citizen by meeting their Representatives and Senators. Nearly 50,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have participated in this program. Grady EMC has participated in this program for more than a quarter of a century. "
Teachers are encouraged to nominate as many rising seniors as they believe best fit the Washington Youth Tour opportunity. Please click on this link for more information about the program and to help select the best candidates.
