Man killed by off-duty officer in Douglasville Walmart parking lot
In Douglasville, Ga., a fatal shooting took place in the parking lot of a Walmart at 1 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2019. 45-year-old Johnathan Liddell was shot to death inside his vehicle.
On February 17, 38-year-old Othello Jones, an off-duty police officer with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Enforcement and Removal Operations, also known as ICE and ERO, discharged a personal firearm in Douglas County, Ga., resulting in the death of one person. He had been traveling with his wife and children in his personally-owned vehicle prior to the incident while off duty as an ERO. At this time, the police are still looking into this incident.
ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility investigates ICE officer-involved shootings that relate to law enforcement partners. The Office is looking into video surveillance on the day of the shooting and questioning witnesses. Douglas County District Attorney Ryan Leonard said Jones’ wife called police immediately after her husband fired a shot.
Although few details were released at the time of the shooting, it has since been revealed through police reports that Jones felt he was being followed and threatened by Liddell while driving with his family in his car and had called the police prior to the shooting. Also, Jones said he shot Liddell in the parking lot because he saw Liddell reaching for what looked like a gun; however, that gun turned out to be a plastic "Airsoft" weapon.
Witnesses say that they overheard people arguing before shots were fired. Soon after, police arrived to check on Liddell, but he was dead. The following day, it was said that police had not filed charges or made an arrest.
