James Harden on track for MVP season
Is James Harden on his way to his second MVP award? In an NBA season, there are 82 games, but 46 games into this season, Harden has blown the league away. According to ESPN, Harden averaged 36.4 points in December, and in January he has kicked it up a notch. Harden has being scoring like never before.
For the month of January, Harden has averaged 44 points per game. He is the third player in the last thirty years to score at least 400 points in a ten-game span.
For the eight games he has played this month, Harden has scored 44, 38, 42 ,43, 38, 57, and 58 points. His performances in January alone makes him the MVP favorite.
During his 57-point game on Monday, January 14, Harden set the Rockets' franchise record with 36 first half points. This game was his 17th straight game with at least 30 points, which is the longest streak since Wilt Chamberlain had 20 straight games in 1964.
Last year, during his MVP campaign, Harden scored at least 40 points 11 times. This season alone, he has 15 games where he has scored at least 40 points. The last player to post back-to-back games with 55 or more points was Wilt Chamberlain. Harden is working at an is all-time high because most of his team is hurt. Chris Paul and Clint Capela are both out with injuries.
If Harden can continue to lead the Rockets without Paul and Capela, he should be the favorite in this year's MVP race.
