'Black Panther' cast presents $250K college scholarship
Walt Disney Studios and superstars Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira have collaborated to make a "Black Panther Scholarship." This will be a year-long mentor ship program that will pick up to 18 woman from underserved communities in LA; all will receive at least $10,000. Up to six girls will receive a full ride scholarship.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, ”While the THR program is in its ninth year, this is the first year Disney has funded a $250,000 Black Panther scholarship." The scholarship selections will be throughout the next year.
The first winner of the Black Panther Scholarship is 17-year-old Kalis Coleman. According to a Hollywood reporter, Coleman received a 250,000 full ride scholarship to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; she plans to be a pediatric dermatologist. According to Coleman, "I just want to stand and say this is for girls who live in Compton, who live in Inglewood, and this is for girls and men who face adversaries. I just want to say that we can do it and it is possible. "
Actress Gurira stated to an audience, "We know that if we want to live in a world that looks more like Wakanda, the first step is you invest in women and girls.” T
The main focus of the program is to help underprivileged girls who've worked hard, want to follow their dreams, and become successful in their futures.
