Syrupmaker wrestling team defeats Thomas County Central Jackets

The CHS Syrupmaker Varsity Wrestling team had its first home match versus the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018. The Syrupmakers won the match with a final team score of 53-26.

The CHS Wrestling team started off the season with three tournaments: Bears Duals on November 7, Blue Devil Duals on December 1, and Hornet Duals on December 7-8. At the Cook County Hornet Duels, the wrestlers had up to nine matches each. They wrestled various numbers of schools at both tournaments, including Colquit County, Cook County, Lamar County, Pierce, Columbia, Lake City, Tifton, Lowndes, West Lawrence, and others.

According to Coach Kevin Elliot, "the wrestling team is led by seniors Jereel Hardy, Sterling Dekle, and Johnny Doyle." Senior Sterling Dekle is in the 182 weight class, Johnny Doyle is 138, and Jereel Hardy is 120.

The Juniors on the team are Likobe Teal at 170, Eli Pyrz at 220, Kason Sellers at 132, Jason Maxwell at 126, Delvin Duvenhage at 152, and Matthew Dodson at 220.

The sophomores on the team are William Seltzer at 126, Miguel Bastide at 126, Branden Green at 195, and Pierce Galvin at 145.

Lastly, this year's freshmen wrestlers include Anthronou Hadley at 106, Micheal Dangler at 113, James Cartwright at 126, and Zachary Cash at 145. Chastin Johnson, Gabriel Elias, and Victor Hernandez round out the freshman group.

This year's coaches are Kevin Elliot and Paul Coleman; both are staff members at Washington Middle School.

The rest of the season consists of the Capital City Classic at Chiles on December 14-15, the Packer Tournament at TBA on January 5, an away match versus Bainbridge on January 8, Region Duals at CHS on January 11, State Duals in Macon on January 17-19, the Syrupmaker Tournament at CHS on January 26, Region 1 AAAA Traditional at TBA on February 1-2, State Sectionals in Atlanta on February 8-9, and State Championships in Atlanta on February 13-16.
