Cairo dominates Columbus in 2018 Homecoming Game
On Sept. 28, 2018, the Syrupmakers took on the Columbus Blue Devils. Coming into Friday night's game, the Blue Devils were 2-2, only losing only to Carver Columbus (6-0) and Troup County (6-0).
In the first quarter, the Red and Black easily put up 20 points. Sophomore running back Tay Solomon scored a touchdown on his first play from scrimmage. Junior quarterback Matthew Peters then scored a touchdown on a 15-yard run. Junior wide receiver Nick Gosier also scored on a 38-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Ronnie Baker. The Blue Devils couldn’t get into the end zone the entire quarter.
In the second quarter, the Syrupmakers added 10 points to their 20-point lead. Peters threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end
Earnest Taylor. Sophomore kicker Noah Jones also kicked a 21-yard field goal. Columbus couldn’t manage to get points on the board for the second straight quarter.
The third quarter was much like the first. Cairo came out fast and scored 16 more points. One was another 7-yard rushing touchdown by Peters. The other was a 36-yard touchdown pass from Baker to senior wideout Cameron Goosby. The Blue Devils still couldn’t manage to put 7 points on the board this quarter.
The fourth quarter started with the Blue Devils' possession on the 9 yard line. After three long quarters, the Blue Devils scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass. The Syrupmakers were satisfied with their 39-point lead and put the junior varsity team in to finish the game. The final score was 46-7.
