Selena Gomez gives emotional acceptance speech

Selena Gomez was named Billboard Magazine’s "Woman of the Year." On Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at the Women in Music awards ceremony, Gomez delivered an emotional acceptance speech for her accomplishment.

Gomez dedicated the award to her best friend, Francia Raisa, who gave Gomez her kidney. Raisa presented Gomez with the award, multiple sources reported. Gomez said that Raisa should be receiving the award not herself, according to CNN. Billboard reported that during the speech Gomez almost immediately started to tear up.

Gomez told the audience that Raisa “saved her life.” Gomez needed a kidney because she has lupus, and the disease affected her kidney in such a negative way that she needed a new one. Raisa stated, “when I found out I was a match for Selena, I didn't think twice about it," according to Billboard.

"Specifically, this year, I would like to thank my amazing team and my family because they stuck with me through some really hard times, I got to do a lot this year, even though I had a couple of other things to do," Gomez also stated in her speech.

This year, Gomez has released new music, produced a hit Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why,” dealt with her health struggles, and continued her Instagram fame, Billboard reported.
