Recap: 2017 New York City Marathon

The New York marathon, which covers 26.2 miles through all five boroughs of the city, is one of the biggest races in in America. This year, over 50,000 runners came from all over the world to run the race, including celebrity Kevin Hart.

The race starts in Staten Island for the first mile, then goes over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn for 13 miles. The race then moves into Queens for miles 14 and 15, Manhattan for miles 16 through 19, the Bronx for miles 20 and 21, and finally back into Manhattan for miles 22 through 26. The race finishes in Central Park. Fluid stations start at mile three and continue for every mile, according to the race's official website, nycmarathon.org. There are also nutrition stations at mile 18 and fruit stations at miles 20 through 23.

This year's race included some of the top runners in the world, including returning champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie; the fastest marathoner Wilson Kipsang; top American male runner, Meb Keflezighi; and top American female runner, Shalane Flanagan. This was the final marathon for Keflezighi. Celebrity and comedian Kevin Hart competed in his first marathon.

Winning the male race was Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor, who finished with a time of 2:10:53. Kamworor, who is just 24 years old and a two-time cross country and half marathoner world champ, had never won a marathon until now. The female winner was Shalane Flanagan, who finished with a time of 2:26:53, making her the first American female to win the marathon in 40 years.
