49ers acquire Jimmy Garopolo from the Patriots
On Oct. 30, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers acquired quarterback Jimmy Garopolo from the New England Patriots. Garopolo is an immediate upgrade to the 49ers quarterback position and instantly improves the team.
The 49ers finally have a capable quarterback. This season they have used quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard. Hoyer didn't last long, as he get benched in his sixth start. Beathard had only threw two touchdowns; he threw three interceptions and also only completed 52 percent of his passes, according to USA Today.
In order to get Garopolo, the 49ers traded away a second round pick in next year's draft. They didn't have to give up any first round picks, and they still have one more pick for the second round. Garopolo also comes at an affordable price of $434,158 this year in the last year of his rookie contract. The 49ers even have the choice to franchise Garopolo.
With the Patriots parting ways with Garopolo, their long-term quarterback situation is looking foggy; even though Tom Brady has a contract for 2018 and has won five Superbowl rings, he is 41-years-old and there is no one in the organizatio to replace him.
