NFL Week 4 Recap: Panthers defeat Patriots
Many sports writers believed the New England Patriots would go undefeated this season, but the Patriots' two losses so far this season changes all of that. On Oct.1, 2017, the Patriots lost to the Carolina Panthers 33-30.
In the last four games, the Patriots have given up 300 passing yards to the quarterbacks they have played against. "Collectively, as a whole team, we've all just got to do a better job," Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick told USA Today.
After Patriots quarterback Tom Brady made a touchdown, the defense forced and three-and-out. Brady made another touchdown, and on the Panthers' next possession, Patriots defensive lineman Deatrich Wise sacked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. However, Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore was flagged for illegal use of the hands, giving the Panthers another set of downs. "I'm getting better at somethings, but I'm still learning. I've got to do better," Gilmore told USA Today.
Four plays later, the Patriots stopped the Panthers on their third yard line, only to have safety for the Patriots Patrick Chung flagged for holding.
Newton had his best game since his 2015 MVP season, going 22 of 29 for a total of 316 yards and three touchdowns. One was a seven-yard, wide open run into the end zone, according to USA Today.
"It's never one guy. There's 11 guys out there, I'm never going to say it's one guy who stunk it up. It doesnt matter who it is or what the issue is. We just got to fix it," defensive back for the Patriots Devin McCourty told USA Today.
