Firefighter and wife arrested for stealing from charity
On Sept. 26, 2017, Joseph "Mike" Amison, a member of the Tallahassee Fire Department, was arrested. He was charged with "fraud for swindling to obtain property under $20,000, embezzlement for failure to apply contributions in a consistent manner, and two counts of grand theft of more than $10,000 but less than $20,000," according to WCTV.
He and his wife, Jennifer Amison, a Tallahassee Police Department officer, held a fundraiser this past February for the families of Captain Brad Deanda, Chris Thurman, and Shelby Allen. “The Leon County Sheriff's Office estimates that nearly $24,000 was raised during the event,” according to WCTV. The families who were involved in the fundraiser said, “They never received any money, but rather received excuses from the Amisons.”
Amison sent a message to Allen's father saying that “He and his wife were dealing with health problems and issues with their business, which was causing the delay.” He said that he would portion out the money once their heath and business problems were resolved. However, investigators now say that some or all of it went to the couple's "personal use."
According to WCTV, “Mike Amison was booked into the Leon County Jail Wednesday. Jennifer Amison still has a warrant out for her arrest.”
