Preview: Cairo vs Panthers

The Cairo varsity football team has an away conference game against the Americus-Sumter Panthers from Americus, Ga., on Sept. 29, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers, coached by Erik Soliday, have won the past two games and have a winning streak of three games now, according to MaxPreps. The Panthers have an overall record of 3-2 and 2-0 in the region and are currently tied with the Syrupmakers for first place in the AAAA Region 1 standings.

The Panther’s quarterback is Kierston Harvey, a junior who has passing 775 yards so far this season. In the team's 21-17 victory last week over Northside, he threw for 187 yards, according to MaxPreps. However, has also thrown eight interceptions so far this season (two more than the six total touchdowns he's thrown for), so the Syrupmakers defense has a chance to gain some turnovers.

Kobe Lewis, a senior, leads the team in rushing yards with 724 and six touchdowns so far this season. The Panthers top wide receiver is Braelin Williams, also a senior, who has 311 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, SyrupMakers are 3-2 with a state rank of 135. The Syrupmakers will be coming to this game following a big 30-7 win last Friday against the Shaw Raiders.

The game will be a Touchdowns Against Cancer game, and for every touchdown scored, $17 will be pledged towards the fundraiser of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. So far, there have been 1,972 touchdowns, and with schools pledging money, as well, the fundraiser is up to $99,978 and growing.
