Brewer's minor leaguer hit in chest with pitch, suffers heart attack
Julio Mendez is 20 years old and currently plays shortstop in the Milwaukee Brewers' minor league system. On Aug. 27, 2017, he was struck in the chest by a pitch and suffered a heart attack. He is in in critical but stable condition.
"All of our thoughts and prayers are with Julio and his family. We will provide updates as soon as we know more," Brewers general manger David Stearns told USA Today.
Mendez was struck in the chest by a pitch going 100 mph by Austin Krzeminski. On the field he was given CPR by the medical staff and was immediately taken to the hospital. The game against the AZL Angels was not continued because of the traumatic accident.
Mendez was signed in July 2013 out of his home country of Venezuela, and he also played two seasons in the Dominican Summer league.
"Obviously, we are thinking about him and our thoughts are with him and his family. It's a very scary situation and we're thinking about him and trying to get updates.He is in very serious condition," Brewers manager Craig Counsellwas told USA Today.
