Massachusetts lotto player becomes largest single winner in US history

On Aug. 23, 2017, Mavis Wanczyk won the second biggest overall, and largest for a single winner, lottery jackpot in North American history, according to the BBC. Wanczyk purchased the ticket from a gas station in Massachusetts.

Wanczyk told the BBC that she has quit her job at a medical center, telling reporters that shes "going to go hide in (her) bed," according to the BBC.

She said that winning the lottery has always been a "pipe dream" and that she plays the lottery often for fun, according to MSN. According to BBC, her chances of winning the massive jackpot were one in 292.2 million.

Her lucky numbers were 6, 7, 16, 23, 26, and 4. She chose the numbers through a combination of birthdays and other numbers.

The ticket was officially validated by the Massachusetts State Lottery, and Wanczyk will now decide between whether to receive the payment in a lump sum or in 29 yearly payments. After taxes, it is estimated to be about $443 million.

There were six other winners, according to the Powerball Product Group chairman Charlie McIntyre. The other winners won two million each and were located in Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and the Virgin Islands
