Devonta Freeman signs record five-year contract extension with Falcons

Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman signed a five-year extension contract worth $41.25 million, which now makes him the highest paid running back. The Falcons confirmed the five-year extension on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, according to the National Football League.

“We are very pleased that we were able to get this extension done,” General Manager Thomas Dimitroff told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “Devonta embodies everything we are looking for in a Falcon, and we are proud he’ll spend his career here in Atlanta.”

Freeman, who wears number 24, is 25 years old and is from Baxley, GA.

In the upcoming season, the Falcons are planning on continuing to use Freeman as their primary running back, while also using Tevin Coleman as a secondary option. Combined they have 1,599 rushing yards, 85 receptions, 833 receiving yards, and 24 touchdowns.

Freeman has scored 27 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Freeman became the starting running back in 2016 after his 2015 season when he gained 1,056 yards on 265 carries and caught 73 passes for 578 yards. Last season, he ran for 1,079 yards on 227 carries and had 54 receptions for 462 yards, which earned him Pro Bowl selection.

“This is where I have always wanted to be,” Freeman told Atlanta Journal Constitution.
