Russian Fighter Jet Comes Within 20 Feet of U.S. Navy Plane
On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, a Su-27 Russian Fighter jet approached a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon spy plane. It came within 20 feet of the aircraft, which was flying over the Black Sea near Russian territory, according to Russia's military.
According to NBC News, a Naval spokeswoman stated the Poseidon was "conducting routine operations in international airspace." The U.S. Navy said in a statement that the encounter was "safe and professional" based on factors of distance, speed, altitude, rate of closure, and visibility.
In a statement from Russia's Ministry of Defense, the Su-30 "carried out a 'greeting' maneuver. After that, the U.S. surveillance aircraft changed his flying course away from the Russian border," according to CBS News.
