Ole Miss Admits to Major Violations

On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, the University of Ole Miss announced that they had been charged by the NCAA with a lack of institutional control. With those charges they have been banned from any bowl game in 2017.

According to ESPN, the head coach of the Rebels, Hugh Freeze, has not been able to control his staff. They have been accused of 21 different violations from former or current coaches. Athletic director Ross Bjork said that “the university would contest the allegations of lack of institutional control and the charge against Freeze of failing to monitor his staff.”

The majority of the charges come from “recruiting violations, and improper benefits from boosters.” For example, according to ESPN, one staff member “arranged for a recruit to receive cash payments…totaling $13,000 to $15,600.” Two other recruits received “lodging and transportation” which were “valued at $2,272.”
