Our Staff Recommends: Fun and Free Games for Android and Apple

Recently, we've published reviews and previews of new and upcoming console games, which are great if you have the system and are willing to pay 60 to 100 dollars, but there are plenty of easy and free or inexpensive games out there for mobile. Here are some of our top picks for your Android and Apple devices:

A New Popular Game:

Super Mario Run

Fun, easy, and free to start, the only drawback to this new game is that you have to pay 10 dollars to unlock the whole game. For free to start out, you get the first world up to the castle. You are then asked whether you want to pay $9.99 for all worlds, or one castle for 99 cents.

As far as game play goes, it's very user-friendly and uncomplicated. As one of our staffers put it, "a newborn could play it!" Mario runs by himself, and all you have to do is tap to jump over the obstacles. If Mario dies, a bubble will re-spawn him at the last checkpoint. Fortunately for new players, a new "Easy Mode" being released this week will allow users to get unlimited bubbles.

Right now, Mario Run is available for Apple; it will be released on Android in March.

Classics that are Still Popular:

Clash of Clans

Clash of Clans is a very fun game, but because of the strategic aspects of game play, it's probably better suited for players who are at least 10 years old. As a player, you create and defend your own base, and over time you gain resources like gold, elixir, and dark elixir. You can also raid other people to get more resources and "trophies," which bring your ranking up higher. You can join a clan of other players and become one of the top clans in the world.

Clash of Clans is available on both Apple and Android, and it's totally free, but there are in-game purchases ("gems"), which speed up your upgrading processes and also can be used to buy more resources.

Boom Beach

Boom Beach was created by the same company as Clash of Clans, and it's very similar. It's more or less personal preference, as some like one game over the other. Whereas in Clash of Clans you're based in a forest, in Boom Beach you're based on a beach and defending it from an attacker coming from one direction: the beach (hence the name of the game!).

Like in Clash of Clans, there are events, or challenges, which help players gain more resources and experience. According to our staffer, the graphics are also a "tad bit better."

Also like Clash, Boom Beach is 100 percent free unless you want to make in-game purchases.

Clash Royale

Also made by Supercell, Clash Royale is "like Clash of Clans, but smaller," according to one of our staffers. "They brought in stuff from Clash of Clans to Clash Royale and stuff from Clash Royale in Clash of Clans." The basic idea is that you collect cards and level up your troops for fast-paced, real-time battles against opponents on a smaller scale.

Sports Games:

8 Ball Pool

Several of our staffers said this game is very fun. "Being able to play online against other people you don't know" is part of what makes it so fun. You can also play games against your friends on Facebook.

Madden Mobile

According to our staffer, "It's a portable way to play Madden, instead of playing on PS4 or X Box 1." It's not as good quality as the console versions, but it's still a fun game.

FIFA Mobile Soccer and NBA Live Mobile

Both of these games are very similar to Madden. "The graphics are pretty good, better than Madden Mobile,"
