Women's March on Washington
On January 21, 2017 more than a million people from across the country came to protest our nation’s new president, Donald Trump. There were many marches that took place around the country, but the main event was the “Women’s March on Washington.” The protest even extended beyond the United States.
Many participants feared that women’s rights are under threat from Trump’s presidency due to his misogynistic views during the presidential campaign. You may think that the march was only about women’s rights, but it included much more issues such as reproductive, LGBTQ, religious, and worker’s rights.
According to NYTimes.com, the protest first began as a Facebook post encouraging demonstrators to unite and stand up for what they believe in. This was a success because more than a million men and women came together to protest.
Trump seemed to have ignored the situation, but on the following day, Trump tweeted, “Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if I don't always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views”.
Overall this day will be a day that will be remembered in history. Everyone has a voice and we shouldn’t be afraid to speak up for what we believe in. Together we can make
a difference in the world.
