Balancing Your PH: Part 1 (Water)
Water is an essential for life. In fact, the human body is comprised of mostly water. In today's society, there are many ways to access clean, drinkable water, but is all water "made equal"? Not necessarily. One place to start when looking for the best way to hydrate yourself is to consider the PH balance of the water you drink.
Before we get to PH, let's start with the basics. Water is a polar inorganic compound that is, at room temperature, a tasteless and odorless liquid, nearly colorless with a hint of blue. However, when it comes to drinking water, like tap water, bottle water, and ionized water, which is better for you? Do you drink straight from the tap, do you spend your hard-earned money on bottled water, or do you go buy a filter? Well, there are many things you have to look at, but the big one that we are going to talk about is the PH level of water.
The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline, and anything below 7.0 is considered acidic. For example, a healthy blood pH is just slightly alkaline, measuring approximately 7.4.
So what's the difference between bottled water tap, water ,and ionized water? According to the PH scale, you must flood your body with alkalinity to stay healthy and avoid higher risks for diseases like cancer.
The folks over at the "Better Mankind" YouTube channel tested the PH levels of several popular brands of bottled water, starting with Mount Franklin. The company claims they only use natural spring water, but spring water has a PH of 7; the tested Mount Franklin water, on the other hand, had a PH of 5.5, suggesting that they don't use real "spring water." FIJI, another popular brand of bottled water which the company claims is pumped from an "artesian aquifer," tested at a PH level of 7.5. A generic water brand which also claims to come from a natural spring tested at a 5 on the PH scale.
The tests on tap water, revealed a PH value of 5, which is slightly acidic. It should be noted that this value is lower (or more acidic) than the range of 6.5-9.5 which is required by water quality regulations, according to the Water Research Center. Regardless of PH level, however, tap water often contains which contains chemicals like chlorine, copper sulfate, fluoride, and hydrofluoric acid, which some people believe are harmful to the body. The final test was on ionized water; it had a PH value of 10, which super-hydrates the body, can help eliminate toxins, and adds antioxidants and calcium to the body.
So next time you want water, think about your options before you drink and the potentially harmful and beneficial effects it may have on your body.
