The Murder of Markel
On July 2014, well-known Florida lawyer Dan Markel was murdered outside his Tallahassee home. Two men were originally charged in the case, but last month evidence began to appear that his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, as well as her brother and mother may have been involved in his murder.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat, the lawyers for Luis Rivera, one of the two men, along with Sigfredo Garcia, who were charged with the crime, requested for the trial to be moved away from Tallahassee because ABC’s news show “20/20” recently aired a segment on the trial, and many in the community are currently buzzing about the case. One of the reasons the lawyers want to ensure that Rivera gets a fair trial is that he will be potentially facing the death penalty if convicted.
According to the Democrat, Rivera said he and Garcia rode past the Markel residence on the day before the murder. Many point to this as evidence that Adelson, who had divorced Markel a year earlier, may have been involved and even hired the murderers. She and her ex-husband were locked in a difficult custody battle, and some sources have reported that her family wished for the children to be moved to South Florida.
No one in the Adelson family has been charged with any crime yet, and Wendi Adelson’s lawyer has denied any allegations of her involvement, saying that Rivera’s story “was based on information he had no way to corroborate.”
