Trump Criticized for Calling Former Miss Universe "Miss Piggy"
During the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate called out Trump on stage about the time he mocked the 1996 Miss Universe winner, Alicia Machado, for being overweight. During the debate, Clinton said, “He called this woman 'Miss Piggy,' then he called her 'Miss Housekeeping' because she was Latina.”
According to CNN.com, Clinton stated the she had traveled around to find Alicia Machado. The former pageant winner explained to Clinton that Trump was very abusive with his words towards her, calling her names for gaining weight and yelling at her because of her attitude towards him, although she respected him.
Alicia suffered from anorexia and bulimia when she was 19 years old. She was in and out of hospitals for this, and after about 5 years, she had gained about 60 pounds, which put her at right below the average weight for her age. This is when Trump jumped all over her with the names, calling her “Miss Piggy,” although he claimed he was encouraging her to lose some of that weight.
This subject shocked many supporters of Trump; however, Trump appeared on Fox and Friends the next day and defended his statements, sarcastically suggesting that Clinton, herself, is no saint. According to the Republican nominee, Clinton “found the girl and talked about her like she was Mother Teresa and it wasn't quite that way, but that's OK. Hillary has to do what she has to do.”
