Death of Jose Fernandez

Miami Marlins pitching “ace” Jose Fernandez was killed Sunday September 25, 2016, in a boating accident in Miami. Fernandez was upset because of an argument with his girlfriend.

Friends said Fernandez loved being out in the water, so in order to get his mind off things, Fernandez went on a late night boat ride with his two friends Emilio Macias and Eduardo Rivero. Later that night, the group crashed and was killed when their boat struck a rock jetty.

Although they were seen at a nearby bar later that evening, no signs of drugs or alcohol were present at the crash site. Toxicology reports have not yet been released.

Fernandez, 24, was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 2011 and wore jersey number 16. After joining the big league team, Fernandez quickly became the team’s pitching “ace.”

On Monday, the Marlins played their first game after Jose Fernandez’s death. Dee Gordon, a left-hand hitter, honored Fernandez by switching from the right side to hit, but didn’t swing on the first pitch. He then switched back to his left side position and hit a home run. Gordon was so emotional about his friend’s death that he cried while rounding the bases. He tapped his chest after crossing the plate and waved to the sky as if he had hit the homerun for Fernandez.
