Could Human Organs be Grown and Harvested from Animals?
The National Institutes of Health is possibly going to unblock funding for combining human stem cells with animal embryos. The goal is to advance further research in creating life-saving organs for patients on waiting lists. Technology has advanced so far in the last couple of years that the possibility of a chimera - or hybrid creature with human characteristics - could be possible.
There are a low number of organ donors in the United States, so some believe it would be a good idea to research this project. Even though it’s a very grisly procedure to imagine for the animals that are harvested - especially if the resulting chimera possessed human mental attributes, such as self-awareness - it could, nonetheless, benefit medicine.
In the end there needs to be funding to even begin research, so should there be funding for this project?
