19 year old becomes first female to fly solo across the globe
Zara Rutherford, 19 year old female, just broke two immense world records; being the youngest woman ever to fly solo across the globe and being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe in a microlight plane!
Embarking on her journey on August 18th, 2021, Zara has spent the last five months in her microlight plane and conquering challenges along the way. Zara returned to her home in Belgium on January 20th, 2022, making history and crushing her goals.
According to Zara's website, her route includes, "the UK, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, USA, Latin America to Colombia, then back north via Alaska, to Russia, Korea, Indonesia, India, the Middle East, Europe and back to Belgium, where I plan to arrive in mid January."
A few challenges Zara faced on her ambitious route was specifically in Russia, where temperatures were below -30 degrees on the ground, with no radio signal. This means if something went wrong in those areas, no one would be there to rescue her.
With the media attention Zara has received on her journey, Zara wants to inspire more girls/women to pursue dominantly male careers such as aviation and other careers in STEM.
Zara's dream of becoming a pilot was inspired by her parents, who are both pilots. Zara was introduced to planes as soon as she was born and started flying planes alone at the age of 14.
In the future, Zara plant to attend college with the intent of becoming an astronaut, making more history.
