13-year-old dead following school fight
A 13-year-old California middle school student was recently left in critical condition after a school fight involving two other students. He was soon declared brain dead.
Diego, the now deceased teen, was transported to a local hospital after the fight on September 16 at Landmark Middle School in Moreno Valley, Calif., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.
Footage taken by another student showed Diego being confronted by a student who then attacked him, according to ABC Los Angeles station KABC. A second student then threw another punch at Diego, causing him to fall and hit his head against a nearby pillar. After he was on the ground, the first student hit him once more before running away.
Police quickly arrested two juvenile suspects for assault likely to produce great bodily injury. Police say the juveniles also attended the school.
According to ABC News, "the two suspects were booked into Riverside County Juvenile Hall," according to police. No additional details have been released by police.
Diego was pronounced clinically dead as a result of the injuries. His family has donated his organs to "transform this tragedy into the gift of life for other children."
The suspects remain in custody at the Riverside County Juvenile Detention Facility and, according to officials, will face prosecution for the assault.
